Devotional | The Good Fight
A good fight is a fight we win. In Christ, believers fight FROM victory, not FOR victory. We are called to engage in “the good fight” with faith, wisdom, and spiritual understanding. Many believers become casualties because they are unaware, unprepared, or ill-equipped. The fight is not to obtain victory, but to stand in the victory Jesus already won on our behalf.
‘Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.’ 1 Timothy 6:12
Spiritual warfare begins with having the right focus and pursuit. The good fight is a fight OF faith and a fight IN faith. Faith lays hold of what grace has already provided through Christ.
‘Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.’ Romans 5:1-2
The fight is called good because believers are already declared winners in Christ. Believers fight from the position of:
- Victory, not defeat
- Grace, not self-effort
- Inheritance, not lack
- Sonship, not fear
The Christian life is not passive. Faith is active, aggressive, and obedient. The battle often involves maintaining faith through trials, hardships, persecution, discouragement, emotional pressure, temptation, and fleshly desires.
‘But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.’ James 2:20,26
There is spiritual warfare taking place whether we engage in it or not. Disengaging is not an option if we’re going to walk in the inheritance Jesus has bought and paid for. Spiritual warfare is real. We must understand this battle—how to fight, what to fight, and who to fight.
1. Overestimating the devil – becoming demon-focused and attributing everything to Satan.
- The devil is not omnipresent.
- The devil is not all-knowing.
- The devil is not equal to God.
- Not every problem is directly caused by the devil.
Life issues can be caused by carnality, unrenewed thinking, fleshly choices, lack of wisdom, or emotional immaturity.
2. Underestimating the devil – ignoring spiritual warfare altogether.
- Evil is real.
- Demonic activity is real.
- Spiritual warfare is real.
- Ignoring the battle can lead to needless defeat.
Believers should not be demon-conscious; they should be God-conscious, while remaining aware of spiritual opposition (Ephesians 6:12).
The gospel of the Kingdom often meets resistance. Proclaiming “Jesus is Lord” challenges every false lordship. Discipleship has a cost, but opposition should not cause believers to abandon their faith. We enter the practical rule of God’s Kingdom through perseverance.
‘These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”’ John 16:33
Jesus did not promise a trouble-free life. He promised peace in Him and victory through Him. In Christ, we have peace. In the world, we will have tribulation, but Jesus has overcome the world. His victory is our victory. Believers fight from a position of victory, not defeat.
Godly living brings opposition. Persecution can be “soft” or “hard.”
- Soft persecution includes mocking, false accusations, gossip, hatred, and rejection.
- Hard persecution may include prosecution, imprisonment, violence, or death for the gospel.
Christianity is not a playground; it is a battlefield. There is a war between light and darkness, truth and lies, morality and immorality. The gospel must not be silenced. Darkness prevails only where light is absent. The light of Christ, present in believers, will overcome darkness.
‘Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.’ James 4:7
Spiritually speaking, never lay down the weapons God has given you. Many believers have been disarmed by deception. They lay down their spiritual weapons in the name of tolerance, politeness, or false compassion. Others have never been taught to take up their weapons. We must not allow the enemy to persuade us to disarm ourselves.
‘For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,’ 2 Corinthians 10:4

Submit + Resist = The devil fleeing
‘Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.’ James 4:7 NKJV.
Resist means: to oppose; to stand against; to withstand. Resisting the devil is not ignoring him. It is actively opposing him by faith while standing submitted to God. We are a people going upstream in a world going downstream, and with that comes opposition, but Christ has overcome the world!
