The word hero has quite a few related words that we use today: champion, protector, role model, protagonist, and warrior. In our lives as believers, Jesus is all those things, but so much more. When we combine husband with hero we have an illustration of the intimate relationship that can only be filled by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The institution of marriage is natural, but it points to something supernatural. Believers + Jesus are one spirit, as a husband and wife are one flesh. Jesus is the head of the church, and He relates to us as a husband or bridegroom, and we are His bride/wife.

‘For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.’ Ephesians 5:30-33

Marriage is a type and shadow of a higher spiritual reality: Christ and the church, which Paul calls a “great mystery.” There is a domestic/natural side of marriage (roles, responsibilities, daily life). But there is also a spiritual side of marriage that reveals who Christ is as our hero husband, and who the church is as His Bride.

‘But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.’ 1 Corinthians 6:17

Marriage is the oldest institution known to man. It was created by God, not invented by man. We are called to be faithful stewards of what God reveals about marriage, the church, and the home.

‘Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.‘ 1 Corinthians 4:1

The church is to be a steward of the mysteries of God, including the mystery of marriage as a picture of Christ and the church. Jesus is our hero husband, who loves us with a deep, intense, personal, passionate love. Jesus nourishes and cherishes the church as husbands are charged to nourish and cherish their wives.

The church is to be a steward of God’s love, not just in theory but in experience. We must go beyond a shallow knowledge of God’s love, into a revelation of its width, length, depth, and height. Growth in marriage parallels growth in our relationship with Jesus. Intimacy grows through enduring and overcoming challenges together.

Believers are called “the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” Jesus is our hero husband—He loves, leads, protects, nourishes, and cherishes His people perfectly. We are one spirit with Him in covenant.

‘Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”’ Revelation 21:9

Biblical marriage preaches the gospel. When marriage is redefined or distorted, the picture of the gospel is also distorted. The assault on marriage and gender is essentially an assault on the Gospel.

Reasons for Marriage:

  1. Marriage is part of the natural order of things, as natural as day/night, and the seasons, etc.
  2. Marriage was created by God before sin entered the world, which is why we call it holy matrimony.
  3. Marriage was here before the government, Israel, and the Church. It is the oldest human institution. It is a gift given to humanity.
  4. Marriage is the purpose for being made male and female.
  5. Marriage is the boundary for our sexuality.

Jesus is not the government or culture; He must be Lord over:

  • Our beliefs about marriage,
  • Our identity,
  • Our daily choices.

Believers are stewards of the mysteries of God, including the mystery of marriage, and the mystery of Christ and the church (1 Corinthians 4:1–2).

Believers must:

  • Teach God’s design clearly,
  • Resist adopting or celebrating what contradicts His Word,
  • Pray for a great awakening in the church and in our pulpits.
  • Offer healing and hope, not condemnation
  • Share compassion
  • Model mercy

Fruitfulness in the Christian life comes from our union with Jesus, just like children in a marriage come from the union of husband and wife. Our bodies are not our own. They belong to the Lord. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Cultural messages like “My body, my choice” conflict with the biblical truth that God owns our bodies by right of creation and redemption. We are charged to present our bodies to God as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1).
