Devotional | Born Again, What Now?
People often focus on GOING UP (heaven) instead of GROWING UP (maturity in Christ). Spiritual growth doesn’t happen by accident. God has given us a growth track—essentially the “four basic food groups” of spiritual maturity.
Basic Food Groups
‘Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.’ Acts 2:41-42
Just like our bodies need a balanced diet from the four natural food groups, our inner man needs a balanced diet from the four spiritual food groups:
- Apostles’ doctrine (teaching)
- Fellowship (we cannot grow alone)
- Breaking of bread (communion and bonding)
- Prayers (taught to pray rightly)
God’s Word is spiritual food. We cannot mature without feeding on it regularly.
‘As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.’ 1 Peter 2:2-3
Milk of the Word = elementary, simple truths that are easy to understand and apply. Meat of the Word = heavier truths that require discipline, practice, hearing and doing of the Word.
‘But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”’ Matthew 4:4
Just like we eat every day and yesterday’s meal is gone, we must feed and strengthen our inner man with the Word of God daily.
1. Apostles’ Doctrine (Teaching)
‘Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.’ 2 Timothy 2:15
The Apostles’ doctrine” means the apostles’ teaching—the New Testament explanation of what the Old Testament contained. An Old Covenant mindset is hearing Old Testament stories with little understanding of their New Covenant fulfillment in Christ.
To grow, we must learn how the Old Testament is types and shadows, and how the New Testament shows us the substance in Jesus.
‘All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.’ 2 Timothy 3:16-17
We need daily exposure to the Word, like daily meals. Manna in the wilderness (a type of Christ) had to be gathered daily—it could not be stored up.
