Guarding Our Hearts
There are well over 50 references in Scripture about deception, and yet there are Christians today who are still walking in a measure of deception. It is not God’s plan for our lives. We never need to be victims of the deception of this world.
Jesus said many will come before the end of the age and deceive many. We are responsible for guarding our hearts, but the Word gives us plenty of warnings and safeguards.
Challenging times are ahead for believers. Many people do not want to address the evil and darkness in our world. There are deceivers and impostors who do evil through misrepresentation. They enjoy misleading others, and Paul warns us against them.
Paul is warning and equipping Timothy in how to guard his heart against deception. As believers, we are the light of the world, and we are called to take the truth and permeate the darkness, which includes lies, false witnessing, and deception.We need to be equipped and prepared to face the challenges that are coming. Paul is telling us it is only going to get worse. Believers need to be able to discern evil in the world. We need to know what God has given us to safeguard against deception.
God’s Word
The Word of God is the #1 safeguard against deception. When we make the Word of God the final authority and absolute truth in our lives, it protects us and guards our hearts from all of the deception in our world—we will not be deceived.
God’s Word is exalted above His Name. We need to place a priority on the Word of God in our lives and believe it is the absolute, objective truth, and not merely subjective truth. The Word of God needs to be the final authority in our lives and a priority in our families.
God and the truth of His Word must be held above our own thoughts, opinions, and philosophies. God’s Word must be first place in everything. It’s His Word that sets us apart, sanctifies us, and protects us.
God’s Word is the #1 safeguard against deception, for you and your family.
If we know the Word of God, which is truth, we’ll recognize a lie instantly. We must become students of the Word of God.
Jesus is speaking to believers in this passage. The truth will make you free from fraud, misrepresentations, misguided leaders, and deception. He is the truth—the Living Word. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The truth is written (the Scriptures) and living (Jesus Christ). When we follow Jesus and love Him above everything and everybody, we cannot be deceived.
As we continue in the Word of God, we will love the truth and become uncomfortable with lies. Saturating ourselves with the Word of God, sanctifies us, and gives light and understanding to our path.
The Word of God will equip you with understanding. Truth is light and light is more powerful than darkness. Every time we turn the light on, darkness has to flee. But if we turn the light off by silencing the truth, darkness encompasses everything around. Only the light exposes the darkness and expels it.
That’s the power of God’s Word, truth. We are children of light, no longer children of darkness. We overcome deception and lies by standing in, embracing and loving the truth.
There is no truth outside of Scripture. Scripture is the absolute, infallible truth. There is no truth outside of Jesus, He is the Word made flesh.
