Devotional | Holiness: What, Why, and How
Today, it seems that very few people are talking about holiness, yet we as believers are called to be a holy people. We have the Holy Bible, the Holy Spirit, Holy Scriptures, holy Apostles, and holy prophets. And above it all—God is holy.
Holiness is an important piece of the Christian life and has been part of God’s plan for man from the beginning. It is important to know what holiness IS to avoid legalism, bondage, and misconstrued ideas about who God is and what He wants for us.
The word holy simply means separated, set apart, sanctified. Holiness is being separated, set apart, and sanctified for God’s purpose and will to be performed in our lives. One reason we are to be holy is because God, our Father, is holy and we are His children. We’re to be imitators of God as His dear children.

Holiness has nothing to do with clothes, hair, makeup, or whether you play cards. Those are cultural, temporal behaviors. God does not look at our outer appearance. Holiness is the nature of God in our lives being lived out loud. It is a biblical perspective and attitude regarding life, God’s Kingdom, and how we relate one to another.

We cannot save ourselves. We are not saved by our own holiness, righteousness, or our own good works. We are saved by God’s grace through simple childlike faith.

‘We love Him because He first loved us.’ 1 John 4:19
God’s love is unconditional and not dependent on our holiness.

‘Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.’ Hebrews 4:16
God’s attitude is mercy toward our unrighteousness. He remembers our sins no more. We can come boldly to the throne of grace to receive mercy.

#1 Reason we DO live holy lives:

‘What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?’ Romans 6:1-2
We are forgiven and our sins are blotted out, we are born again and have been made righteous and truly holy. We are now dead to sin. We are not dead IN sin, but dead TO sin. It is no longer our nature to sin, but to be holy.
#2 Reason we DO live holy lives:

Our old man who was a sinner by nature died, was buried, and we’ve been raised a new man in Christ.
‘Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him.’ Romans 6:6-8
When Jesus died on the cross, he put to death our old sinful nature man in Adam and buried it. And we’ve been raised a new man in Christ. That new man is righteous and truly holy.
#3 Reason we DO live holy lives:

We live holy lives as a byproduct of our relationship with the Lord and our new nature in Christ. Everything we do comes out of who we are in Christ, righteous and truly holy. A life of holiness makes perfect sense. Holiness is a byproduct in our outward lives of what Jesus has done in our inward life.
#4 Reason we DO live holy lives:

‘If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray to the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.’ John 14:15-17
God loved us first, based on His character, not our conduct. God loved us while we were still sinners, and He sent Christ to die for us. We love God because He first loved us. As believers, we keep His commandments out of love for Him, not obligation. Living holy is an expression of love and fulfilling the law by loving others.
#5 Reason we DO live holy lives:

Yielding to unholiness gives Satan access to our lives.
‘The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.’ John 10:10
God blesses us unconditionally, but if we yield to Satan and practice unholiness, Satan steals the blessings of God from our lives. Satan corrupts the good things that God has given to us in His grace.
God does not withhold goodness from us when we make a mistake. He does not impute sin to us. He’s not angry with us. Jesus paid the price for our sin. But if we willfully yield to sin, we give Satan access to steal the blessings of God.
Holiness is a byproduct of our relationship with the Lord, and even His chastening produces the fruit of righteousness. The fruit of holiness is produced through God’s love and correction.
There is a profound beauty about holiness. Scripture declares the beauty of God’s holiness, and His mercy endures forever.
