Devotional | Christian Meditation: What It Is and Is Not
Christian meditation is not a mixture of worldly ideas or philosophies. It is not an escape mechanism or a soul-searching scrutiny. Meditation is a biblical principle that brings about the renewing of our minds.
‘Give ear to my words, O Lord, Consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, For to You I will pray.’ Psalms 5:1-2
Misconstrued Ideas about Meditation

“That sounds a little like Eastern religions.”
The entire Bible comes out of the Middle East, so it certainly may sound like something out of other religions. But Christian meditation is a Bible teaching and a Christian discipline.
Christian meditation is not from Middle Eastern religions that are independent of Judeo-Christian faith and values. Christian meditation is a biblical principle.
“Are you teaching mind over matter?”
Renewing our minds is not mind over matter, it is more specifically, how our minds matter. There’s a difference.
“Are you saying through meditation someone can transcend from the human experience to be a god?”
When you are born, you become a new creation and your spirit is one with the Lord.
‘But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.’ 1 Corinthians 6:17
‘To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. ‘ Colossians 1:27
Your spirit man is united to Christ himself. Christ is in you, the hope of glory. We are not trying to become a god, but are renewing our minds to God’s thoughts.
And Christian meditation is not memorization, although memorizing scripture is a very good thing.

Hebrew Definitions of Meditation
Meditation means to ponder, contemplate, and be in deep thought. When we are meditating, we’re thinking about our thoughts. Christian meditation is reflecting on what God has said about you. It is when you get the revelation of what God said AND what God meant.
‘Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.’ Philippians 4:8
Meditation also means to imagine. Your imagination is a powerful part of the Christian experience. This means using your imagination to visualize what you see in the secret place of your heart.
We use our imagination all the time, for every single thing we do in life. We use our imagination to cook, write music, find our car in a parking lot, and create art. Imagination and visualization are not mind games but are God-given tools. A part of meditation is dreaming about the things of God—His plans, purposes, vision, and goodwill for our life.
‘Where there is no vision, the people perish: But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.’ Proverbs 29:18
Godly people perish for a lack of vision, imagination, and the ability to see things the way God sees things. Our faith is strengthened when we are able to ‘see’ the goodness of God and His promises being fulfilled.

Meditation also means to mutter (speak). This is the prayer aspect of meditation, as well as speaking out the promises of God.
‘Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.’ Psalms 1:1-3
Meditation is an exercise and a discipline that follows us from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed. That’s how important it is in the Christian walk.
“And whatever he does shall prosper.” Meditation is for everyone who wants to know the goodness of God. If you’re a mechanic, you can meditate on the goodness of God while you’re fixing cars, and you’ll be a better mechanic.
Meditating on the Word causes us to be rooted and grounded. We become a tree planted by living waters. We are not constantly being transplanted, uprooted, or tossed to and fro.
There is power in meditating on God’s Word and imagining what it says. Meditating on the promise, “By His stripes you are healed,” and imagining (or seeing) yourself healed, and speaking the Word out loud better equips you for the fight of faith.
God wants to displace our old negative thoughts of worry, fear, and unacceptable meditation with acceptable meditation from His Word. He literally paints pictures in your heart of an abundant life.
