Devotional | Got Grit?
Grit is perseverance and endurance, with a passion to overcome obstacles and challenges. A person of grit is not the one looking for a way out. A person of grit is not searching for a path to skirt around difficult tasks. A person of grit is in constant pursuit of what is right and just. A person of true grit literally inspires other people to step up and get some grit for themselves.
And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:9-10
Grit is the courage of your convictions and character. Grit is the relentless pursuit of righteousness, justice and God’s holiness in your life. A person of grit is partnering with God for the simple reason that He has made you holy.
And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Hebrews 6:11-12
Although the word grit is not in the Bible, the concept is on every page. If you read the Bible, you are aware that people in the Word ALL had grit. What does that mean? They had endurance. They had perseverance. They had a passionate commitment to a goal, a vision, or a dream. They added faith to their vision or dream because their passion could not be subdued. Grit is the ability to sustain passion and commitment toward reaching your goals. And sometimes, you need grit in order to see the manifestation of God’s promises. He has promised the redemption of your city and your country, but it will take perseverance, faith and endurance.
For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: Hebrews 10:36
Challenges, struggles and trials are part of life and they will test your faith. As you submit to God and resist the devil during these tests, your patience, perseverance, and maturity will develop your character (grit). The testing of your faith is preparation for the next thing in your life, and the next thing, and the next. Your character is being refined into a person of true grit.
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4
God is raising up men and women of grit. Men and women who have been forged in the fires of adversity and know how to respond to God. Men and women who don’t react to the devil, but walk with integrity and character in the world today.
It takes grit to get married and stay married. It takes grit to run a business built on the foundations of faith and family. It takes grit to raise children with principles from the Word of God. It takes political grit to stand against the onslaught of darkness today, and we need men and women who do not lose heart.
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 2 Corinthians 4:16-17
As the salt of the earth, and the light of the world, believers must stand strong against evil. Men and women with grit will be called to stand against darkness, principalities and powers.
The Kingdom of God suffers violence, but the violent take it by force. This is not natural violence, but spiritual violence. Believers are compassionate, merciful, long-suffering peacemakers, not volatile, violent men and women. But we are born again, Holy Ghost filled, gritty people who refuse to let opposition to the Kingdom back us down. When Jesus is Lord of our lives, we must be spiritually militant to stand against today’s culture. God is calling people of grit to fight the good fight—the fight of faith.
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12
This fight is to believe God for our homes, our families, our businesses, our churches, and our communities. Let us not grow weary in doing good, for soon we will reap if we have a little bit of grit. Take some time to read the stories of the Hall of Famers listed below. As you read, look for the grit in their lives—how they believed for the impossible, how they stood against doubt, fear, danger and even death. Be encouraged and motivated to develop grit in your life.
