When the Shaking Begins
God wants our faith to be unshakeable. He wants us to be steadfast in what we believe, steadfast in who He is, and steadfast in His faithfulness.
‘For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.’ Colossians 2:5-8
Paul commends the Church for their steadfastness in the faith (vs 5). Today, we also need to be steadfast, unmovable, and unshakeable in our faith.
We receive Him by grace through faith, and this is how we’re to live. We’re to walk in the faith that saved us by God’s grace (vs 6). We need to be established in our faith by becoming rooted and grounded in Jesus, the truth, and having faith in God’s Word rather than the words of the world (vs 7). And each of us needs to be aware of the vain philosophies, empty deceit, traditions of men, and the rudimentary principles of the world (vs 8).
The world operates in one direction, but God’s Kingdom operates in a very different direction. For example, money is how we access goods, services, and even power in the world. Not so in the Kingdom of God. Faith is to the Kingdom what money is to the world. Faith is how we access the Kingdom of God. Faith is how we access all the promises of God and walk in His blessings.
The Basics of Faith
‘For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.’ Ephesians 2:8-10
We are saved by God’s grace through faith and even the faith we have is a gift from God. We are not saved by our own holiness, personal performance, works of the law, our ability to do good things, or our ability to refrain from doing bad things. We cannot deserve, earn, or merit salvation. It is by His grace through faith.
We are made righteous through faith. Even under the old covenant, men were saved by faith (Hebrews 11).
‘Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.’ Habakkuk 2:4
No one is justified by the law. The purpose of the law was to make sin known, not to make us righteous with God. The law revealed sin, but righteousness is revealed in Jesus and in the Gospel.
‘For we walk by faith, not by sight.’ 2 Corinthians 5:7
We must believe what God says, no matter what we see, and walk in unshakeable faith in His Word. Our sensory man (outer man) is perishing, but our inward man is being renewed day by day. Faith in God’s Word above all our senses is how we are to live. Our feelings and emotions can be manipulated (shaken), but our faith cannot be moved.
‘And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”’ Mark 5:34
Jesus told the woman with the issue of blood that her faith had made her whole. Our faith, mixed with the Word of God, can make us whole. Faith makes a difference in every part of our lives.
‘And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”’ Luke 17:15-16,19
‘So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.’ Matthew 17:20
‘Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”’ Mark 9:23
All things are possible, and nothing is impossible. An unshakeable faith believes God’s Word above any circumstance or situation.
